What are Interjections?
Interjection are a part of speech used to convey or express sudden feelings and emotions. There are no particular rules as to where interjections should be placed in a sentence, but most often, they are seen to appear in the beginning of a sentence. They are used to form exclamatory sentences. In order to develop a clearer idea of what interjections are exactly, take a look at how different dictionaries define an interjection.
Interjections add meaning to a sentence or context by expressing a feeling, making a demand, or emphasizing a thought.Interjections can be either a single word or a phrase, and they can be used on their own or as part of a sentence.
Examples of Interjections

- Hey! Get off that floor!
- Oh, that is a surprise.
- Good! Now we can move on.
- Jeepers, that was close.
Types of Interjections
There are 6 types of interjections to express greeting, joy, surprise, approval, attention and sorrow, when used in sentences.
1. Interjections for Greeting
Interjections for Greeting is used in the sentence to indicate the emotion of warmth to the person meeting with such as Hello! , Hey! , Hi! Etc
- ‘Hey! Where are you going?’
- Hi!, What are you up to ?
- Hello!, I am Ekta.
2. Interjections for Joy
Interjections for Joy is used in the sentence to indicate immediate joy and happiness on any happy occasion occurred such as hurrah, wow, hurray, etc. these include: Hurrah! , Hurray! , Wow! Etc
- Hurrah! We’ve won!
- Good! Now we can move on.
- Wow! What a beautiful dress!
3. Interjections for Attention
Interjections for Attention is used in the sentence to draw attention of someone such as Look!, Listen!, Behold!, hush!, shh! etc.
- Look! She is so bad.
- Listen! I am not talking about you.
- Behold! Something is there.
- Shh!, be quiet!.
4. Interjections for Approval
Interjections for Approval is used in the sentence to express the strong sense of approval or agreement for something that has happened such as Bravo! , Brilliant! , Well done!
- Well done! You won the race
- Brilliant!, that was a good shot.
- Bravo!, You scored the most.
5. Interjections for Surprise
Interjections for Surprise is used in the sentence to express the strong sense of surprise about something that has happened such as Ha! , What! , Oh! , Ah! , Eh!
How and When to Use Interjections?
When using interjections, there are some very important punctuation rules that you should keep in mind. Given below are the points you have to remember.
- When a short interjection is used in the beginning of a sentence, it should be followed by a comma.
- When an interjection forms a sentence by itself, the interjection can be followed by a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark.
- When an interjection is used in the middle of a sentence, the interjection has to be preceded and followed by a comma.
- In a conversation, interjections are sometimes allowed to stand alone.
- It is better if you do not use too many or any interjections in a formal context.
